The Worst Mentors

Our society is full of all types mentors from various backgrounds. There are the good mentors and there are the bad mentors. The good me4477_4477_5ntor takes the newbie (or amateur) under their wings, as it were, and guides them, teaches them, even promptly corrects them, and molds them, based on the mentors own personal knowledge and personal experiences, into the person that they should become.  A bad mentor, on the other hand, will be negligent, excessively critical, and will ultimately fail in their efforts to to mold their pupil successfully.

Then there is another class of special mentors. These special mentors don’t necessarily take people under their wings, personally, but they do influence people, as it were, from a distance. These type of mentors are usually popular, often well-known, and many are very famous.

Often, people want to be like them, they study these mentors from a far in order to emulate them. And they try to dress like them, talk like them, ACT like them, and just all around idolize them. Many of these types of famous mentors, on the other hand, usually seek to profit from their influence of the of the masses. These can be, at times, the worst mentors around.

How Do The Worst Mentors Influence People?

They use their God-given talents and skills to lead people away from the God of the Bible in order to follow after the destructive false god’s of this world. The false god’s of this world are many but can often be summarized into three categories:

  • money,
  • self-centeredness,
  • worldliness.

Through the use greed and a desire to get-rich-quick, these famous mentors lead the vulnerable masses into a state obsessing over fame and fortune, all the while, relieving the masses what little money they do have. Jesus even taught about the influence of money over people when He said that people will really only serve one of two masters: either they will serve God; or they will serve money (Matthew 6:24). The world majors on leading people to seek after riches as a way to obtain the ultimate definition of success and achievement.

That is why these people are possibly the worst mentors that we can have!

They, also, love to lead people away from self denial, as Jesus taught, and into selfishness ambitions. The agenda of the day is putting yourself first. Treating yourself to the best pleasures that this world can give, when Jesus clearly taught :

“…if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me…”(Matthew 16:24)

These famous mentors even include some very well-known preachers in their midst, who teach us that God wants to enable us to become  the best we can be by given us almost everything we desire. It may sounds good on the surface, but it’s actually a lie! The Bible teaches about the whole duty of man in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, when it says,

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”

“For God shall bring every work into judgement, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”

Church, we must learn that our duty, first and foremost, is to God, then to others, and finally to ourselves! This is a foreign concept to most Christians now-a-days because many are not always taught the Word of God in its true context. Instead they are deceived by the prosperity gospel, self-help gospel, and the seeker-friendly message, which has wide spread appeal to the flesh and its desire for worldliness.

These special mentors are not only the worst mentors that we can be mentally influenced by, but they can also be the worst  mentors that we can become spiritually influenced by. They lead the masses into friendship with the world. That is to say they deceive many (even those in the church of Jesus Christ) to live a life that conforms to the principles of the world.

Why?

They teach this in order to get us to avoid the persecution that comes from trying to live a life of righteousness. The Bible clearly teaches in James 4:4 about those who seek to please the world. James taught the church saying,

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

He used the term “adulterers and adulteresses,” to suggest that as we in the church are the Bride of Christ, whenever we go after the ways of the world and the principles of the world, we have cheated on Christ as our First Love. And we are serving the gods of this world instead of our God and Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Where Do Most People Encounter the Worst Mentors?

They become aware of these type of mentors usually through mass media of some sort. The biggest culprit, of course, is through television. Television really does tell or teach a vision, if you will, except usually it’s an ungodly vision. Television is probably one of the biggest classrooms around. It is a great medium of learning and communication, in and of itself, that can be used for good or evil. As Christians, we must be aware that much of our culture is heavily influenced and shaped the most by those who are seen on television.

Our eyes should be opened to the fact that there are other major mentors (if you will) in the media that teach the masses and mentor society as if they were one big university. These include: radio, newspapers, magazines, and finally the Internet. It seems that every medium that people use to gather their news and information, or to be entertained, serves to lead people into ungodliness in one sense or the other.

How Must We React To the Worst Mentors?

We must beware whenever we encounter them! We must keep our guard up in order to know when they are leading us away from God’s will. Therefore, we must become students of the Word of God (The Bible). We cannot take it for granted that even the Television or Internet preachers will teach us the true Word of God correctly. Some of them present a different gospel and a different Jesus than is taught, in context, in the Bible; and we must beware!

And know this for sure, that the Apostle Paul taught us to avoid such ones. That suggests that sometimes its just time to turn the channel, even if they sound good and entertaining to us, we must realize that they are still leading listeners to hell for the sake of riches. They are leading their listeners away from the True and Living God and the Apostle Paul was very clear in Galatians 1:8-10 when he stated,

(8)”But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”

(9)”As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

(10)”For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”

Finally, if we are going to be true servants of Christ and true sons and daughters of the Living God, we cannot allow ourselves to be mentored by the worst mentors. We cannot allow ours to become caught-up and trapped into the philosophy of this world! Our mentor should be the Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches in First John 2:27,

“But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.”

In other words, let the Spirit of God teach us and the Word of God (which the Holy Spirit has given to us) guide us. Jesus, Who is working through the Spirit of God, Who is also known as the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Ghost is our Teacher, our Mentor, our Leader, and our God. The position should be occupied, there are no vacancies for the Great Mentor of All Times!      A-MEN
