Obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit is vital, even when it does not make sense to us at the time. Why? The Holy Spirit (also called the Holy Ghost) has a much higher view and vantage point than we have. He has the Divine Director’s point of view, while we only see maybe one tiny side of a situation. This is where trusting in God comes in, we must trust that He can lead us where we cannot yet see.
It is like driving a car with blinders on, where the driver can only see one small area. Eventually, this driver will, without a doubt, have a wreck, or at least have to pull over to the side of the road without arriving to his destination on time. This is what our life is like without the Holy Spirit’s direction. The Holy Spirit has clear vision and can see the entire pathway to the destination that we are trying to get to.
When Will We Know?
In time, after we have arrived to our destination, we can look back over the path we traveled and see why the Lord led us the way He did. The pitfalls will become evident once we have passed safely over them. We will start to see that we had to have a Divine Director to bring us directly into the will of God. As the old gospel song says, “… we’ll understand it better by and by…”(written by Charles Albert Tindley). Paul, however, explains it even better in 1 Corinthians 13:12 when he says,
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”(King James Version)
Literally, we do not have 20/20 spiritual vision. Many times we may think that we do but we are wrong. We are only able view life from our particular circumstances and from our limited experiences, therefore, we don’t see the issues that lie deep beneath the surface of people’s hearts. Furthermore, there is usually a reason behind the reason that it is impossible for us to know, but the Divine Director knows all.
Learning To Be Led By The Holy Spirit
After a while, circumstances will bring us to the inevitable crossroads of life. We will be faced with a decision to either go left or to go right. This is the time when we must lean our faith on the Holy Spirit to lead us in the right direction. This is also, the time when we must learn patience and wait on the leading of the Holy Spirit. If we miss His direction we will make the wrong the decision and end up paying a heavy price.
But Jesus Paid It All At Calvary!
Jesus opened the Divine Doors of Heaven and sent the precious Holy Spirit to give comfort, help, and direction to all those who have placed their faith in the sacrifice that He made on Calvary’s hill. This means that we now have the right to ask the Holy Spirit in faith to guide us, direct us, and to lead us, although we may not be perfect. When we place our focus on Christ, now we can expect the Holy Spirit to be our Divine Director, Overseer, and Friend to the end.
With the correct understanding of where to place our faith, we must practice waiting on the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit leads us, at times, in different ways. Sometimes He speaks vocally out loud as He did to the church at Antioch in Acts 13:2 when He told them to separate to Him Saul(also known as Paul) and Barnabas. Other times He speaks through a supernatural form of knowledge that He just places in our hearts without us even thinking about the subject of the striking knowledge that He just gave us. But more often than not He speaks to us through His Word and His presence validating a passage of scripture that catches our eye.
That is why it is important to try to read the Bible every day, if not multiple times a day. We must allow the Holy Spirit to lead us.
Probably Jeremiah prophesied it best when he stated in Jeremiah chapter 10:21 (reading from the New American Standard Bible),
“For the shepherds have become stupid And have not sought the Lord; Therefore, they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered.”
Therefore, I must tell all Christians: not to be stupid by not seeking the Lord. It Is Time To Seek The Lord.
- Fast for a few hours,
- open the Word of God (the Bible),
- and read various passages then see which scripture sticks out to you,
- especially if the anointing of the Holy Spirit touches you as you read that particular verse/verses of scripture.
This is how we can be led by the Spirit. And when we obey His leading then we will find ourselves actually traveling in the right direction for a change. We will be able to say with confidence that God is my Divine Director. A-MEN
